AMRA Medical Announces Abstract Accepted for Presentation at the 2019 International SCWD Conference in Berlin

  • December 2, 2019

LINKÖPING, Sweden; December 2, 2019 – The SCWD – Society on Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders – aims to progress research and bring practical solutions to health-care teams worldwide.

AMRA’s abstract describing the use of their innovative technology and method to detect individuals with adverse muscle composition has been accepted for poster presentation at the 12thInternational SCWD Conference in Berlin.  The abstract was also selected as one of three finalists for the Young Investigator Award, recognizing Jennifer Linge’s deep scientific contributions to further the sarcopenia field.  AMRA will present their research illustrating the importance of identifying adverse muscle composition within obesity using MRI data from the large UK Biobank Imaging Study.

A recent study showed that sarcopenia is underdiagnosed within obesity mainly due to current sarcopenia definitions being BMI-dependent and the correlation between body size and muscle mass insufficiently adjusted1. AMRA scientists quantified fat-free muscle volume and muscle fat infiltration in a study of 9 612 participants using a 6-minute MRI protocol, automated image analysis (AMRA® Researcher), and utilized sex and BMI-matched virtual control groups to create a personalized muscle volume z-score for each participant. They observed that participants with obesity commonly had adverse muscle composition, which was associated with a high prevalence of low functional performance and metabolic comorbidities.

Abstract Title: Adverse muscle composition within obesity is associated with low functional performance and increased comorbidity – Results from the large UK Biobank imaging study
